The loud bangs and flashes produced by fireworks during New Year's celebrations can be frightening for a dog. Even if your dog does not mind the fireworks, it is a good idea to walk it before the fireworks begin on New Year's Eve so that it does not have to endure the loudest commotion.
Fireworks may be set off from 6pm on New Year's Eve to 2am on New Year's Day. It is important for everyone that these times are observed. Many municipalities have also designated specific areas in which fireworks may be used. When you walk your dog before the fireworks commence, it can rest indoors for the worst part of the night's bangs and brouhaha.
Keeping the drapes closed and the lights on inside may help a fearful dog. Turning the radio or television on is also a good idea, as it drowns out some of the outdoor noise. If a dog hears other sounds inside the home, the bangs from fireworks going off outside may sound less loud. You can also try and draw the dog's attention elsewhere by engaging it in a shared, interesting activity.
If your dog is agitated by the sound of fireworks, you should not visibly pity it or show it any special attention. Just let the dog hide in a place it finds comforting. By acting in an emphatically calm manner, you communicate to the dog that the fireworks are not a cause for concern.
Talk to a vet about the possibility of medicating your dog if fireworks trigger a very strong fear reaction in it. If a terrified dog breaks free and runs away from you, ask after it at your local animal shelter.
